Our History & Legacy
Our History & Legacy
Ryde Water Polo Club has a proud and longstanding history within Australian water polo, with roots dating back to the early 1960s. Originally established through Ryde Swimming Club, water polo at Ryde was formally revived and developed in the early 1970s through the dedication and leadership of George and Betty Gerrie, whose passion, vision and tireless commitment helped shape the foundations of the club we know today.
Together, George and Betty played a pivotal role in rebuilding water polo at Ryde and fostering a strong culture of community, volunteerism and player development. Through coaching, administration, mentoring and countless hours of volunteer work, they helped establish the values and spirit that continue to define Ryde Water Polo Club more than 60 years later.
In recognition of their lasting contribution, George and Betty Gerrie were awarded Life Membership as foundation members of the club in 1980. Their legacy continues to be honoured through our annual club presentations and awards, ensuring future generations understand and appreciate the dedication and community spirit upon which the club was built.
Throughout the decades, Ryde has developed players from grassroots junior programs through to State, National and Olympic representation. Importantly, Ryde’s legacy continues to shape the club today. Former Australian representatives and Olympians, including Yvette Higgins and Peter Gerrie, remain actively involved in supporting and developing the next generation of Ryde players. Their ongoing contribution to junior development reflects the strong culture of mentorship, community and giving back that has long been part of the Ryde Water Polo Club identity.
Ryde Water Polo Club is also proud to call Ryde Aquatic Leisure Centre home — the official Water Polo venue of the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games. The venue hosted all men’s and women’s preliminary round matches during the Games and remains an important part of Australian water polo history.
Ryde has also contributed to the sport internationally through officiating and leadership. Life Member Nicholas Hodgers Jnr has represented Australia as an official at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games and the 2025 Singapore Senior World Championships, in addition to multiple Junior and Youth World Championships between 2009 and 2017, as well as FINA World League competitions in 2018 and 2019.
Today, Ryde continues to build on this legacy by fostering an inclusive and community-focused environment where players of all ages and abilities can develop skills, build lifelong friendships and enjoy the sport of water polo.
At Ryde, we are proud of our history — and excited for the future still to come.
Representative Pathways & Australian Representatives
Ryde Water Polo Club has a proud history of developing athletes who have gone on to represent New South Wales and Australia at the highest levels of the sport.
Throughout the club’s history, Ryde became widely recognised for the strength of its junior development pathways, with many players progressing from grassroots competition through to State and National representative teams. For a number of years, players developed through Ryde contributed significantly to NSW junior and senior representative squads, reflecting the club’s strong focus on player development and coaching.
Ryde players have proudly represented Australia across multiple generations, including at Olympic Games, World Championships and international competitions. Former Ryde athletes such as Geoff Clark, Trent Franklin, Yvette Higgins, Peter Gerrie and others have contributed to Australia’s rich water polo history at the elite level.
The club is especially proud of former Ryde player Yvette Higgins, who scored the winning goal in Australia’s historic Women’s Gold Medal victory at the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games — a defining moment in Australian sporting history.
These achievements reflect not only individual excellence, but also the dedication of the coaches, volunteers, families and club community who have supported generations of Ryde athletes throughout their water polo journeys.
